Liquid Penetrant Testing & Inspection

RRL NDT uses all forms of liquid penetrant testing (PT) and inspection to detect surface cracks indications and porosity on various materials and parts. Our technicians provide service in accordance with SNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, and CP-189. Our Level II and III technicians are available to travel to your location to provide liquid penetrant inspection and other NDT services at your facility.

Liquid penetrant testing (also known as FPI, red dye, fluorescent check, blacklight check, and *Magnaflux check) is an inexpensive nondestructive testing technique which can be easily performed by a certified inspector. Different NDT codes, specifications, and procedures require the inspection to be performed in a particular manner. NDT inspectors performing liquid penetrant testing should be certified to a Level I, II, or III. Procedures such as SNT-TC-1A or NAS-410 are examples of the requirements NDT inspectors must follow. RRL NDT technicians are certified and experienced in these procedures to provide quality and thorough testing.

Liquid penetrant testing services are most often used to detect cracks and voids open to the surface of nonporous metallic materials. The sensitivity rating of penetrants allows them to be used on casting and machined surfaces by using lower sensitivity level ½ on castings and level III on machined surfaces. Testing of high-temperature applications such as hot-in-service pressurized pipes must use a specially formulated penetrant chemical. RRL NDT technicians will be able to determine the appropriate penetrant and testing procedure for your specific scenario to provide you accurate results.

If you are in need of liquid penetrant testing NDT consulting services at your facility, please contact us. We also provide training in liquid penetrant testing Level I, II, & III and a variety of other NDT types. If you are looking to get your team certified in PT, our Level III technicians can help!

*Magnaflux is a name brand known for specializing in both liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing, which are two different NDT testing methods. This unfortunately creates confusion on which method to use when a liquid penetrant test is referred to as a Magnaflux test.
